10 Summer Life Hacks You Can Try at Home

Would you ditch your affordable condo in Pasig City for an underground dwelling and put it on sale just to beat the summer heat? Well, with the unforgiving hot temperature we are experiencing right now, it is not possible that we resort to extreme measures. It is true that living underground is cooler based on an article in BBC, but as of now, the Philippines has no houses with features like that.

For the meantime, let us be satisfied with the summer hacks you can do inside the confines of your home:

1. Your condo in Pasig City is affordable no more because of the air conditioning unit running 24/7. Why not turn it off at night and switch on a bucket cooler? For this little project you only need a bucket, PVC pipes, ice cubes/water and a mini fan. Watch the video for a short tutorial:

2. After a long tiring day at work and a hellish commute, you probably need something to cool you down. The cheapest frosty treat is a Popsicle but there’s a teeny-weeny problem – it drips and turns into off-putting hand goo. Grab a cupcake liner, poke a hole in the middle, push a Popsicle inside and you have an instant drip catcher.

3. Movie binging on weekends? Ah, perfect. You grab a bag of chips and an ice-cold drink, and you’re all set. But where is the bowl for the chips? Nah, you don’t need one because you can turn the bag into a bowl, just like this one:

4. Do you want to have a good night’s sleep? Put a couple of pillowcases in a sealed bag and store it inside your freezer. Before you retire for the night, slip it in your pillows for a comfy sleep.

5. One glass of fresh peeled mango, coming up! Do you want to enjoy slices of mangoes without sticky fingers? Peel it off with a glass, here’s how:

6. One bottle of soda slushy without running it through a machine—wait, is that even possible? Yup, this hack is like a science project slash thirst quencher. Watch the video to see how this works:

7. Sunburns are nasty. Applying an aloe vera sunscreen or lotion may soothe the burning feeling but you can level up the cooling effect by making ice cubes out of it. Pour a bottle in ice cube trays and store it in a freezer.

8. Get rid of ants by sprinkling coffee grounds on areas where they gather or can be seen. According to Reader’s Digest, “coffee’s high nitrogen content burn bugs.” This is an eco-friendly alternative than spraying bug repellents.

9. Flattened pillow inside a chilled pillowcase is a not good combination. Restore your pillows in its fluffy glory by leaving it under the sun for an hour or two. A tip from MetroUK. Hey, at least the season’s heat did some good for once, right?

10. You left a bottle of water in a freezer overnight but instantly regretting it. How can you drink a bottle of ice? You can still enjoy drinking ice-cold water by filling the bottle half way, storing it in a freezer and, once you need it, just fill the rest up with water.
